President's Plane Gets Stuck In The Mud
CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. (AllPolitics, Jan. 28) -- Air Force One has one wheel -- a right wheel -- stuck in the mud at Willard Airport in Champaign-Urbana, Ill, airport officials said.
People on board, traveling with President Bill Clinton on today's Midwestern swing, are beginning to leave the plane after two unsuccessful attempts to free the wheel.
It happened as the Boeing 707 was taxiing and the right wheel just
"nicked the corner" of the tarmac. John Palmer, the pool reporter aboard the plane, says there is no danger to anybody but the plane is mired in the mud.
Palmer said the pilot revved the engines up full trying to free the wheel. Now, he says, a support plane, another Boeing 707, is arriving to pick up the president and others on the plane. The airport is closed until the president can leave. Gear and luggage are being taken off the plane.
