Lott Believes Hussein Should Be Viewed As War Criminal

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 2) -- Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott said Monday he believes Iraqi President Saddam Hussein should be viewed as a war criminal and would probably support legislation being drafted by Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa) that Hussein be tried as a war criminal in The Hague.

Lott was uncertain when or if such a resolution would come before the Senate. He plans to discuss such a move with Specter and other Senators.

The Mississippi Republican told reporters he spoke with Secretary of State Madeleine Albright after his speech last week critical of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan and U.S. Iraq policy. Lott called the talk "helpful."

Referring to Annan's postponed trip to Washington, Lott speculated that Annan may have delayed the meeting out of "some nervousness" that he [Annan] might say something to raise the "consternation as he did last week." Lott was dismayed last week when Annan spoke in favorable terms about Hussein.
