WASHINGTON (March 5) -- Yogesh Gandhi, a controversial Democratic contributor, was arrested overnight and charged with mail fraud after trying to leave the United States.
Gandhi, who has been under investigation for some time, is suspected of funneling $325,000 from an overseas source to the Democratic National Committee.
When Gandhi was arrested in San Francisco, he held a plane ticket for India dated for Thursday. He was arraigned Thursday and released on $100,000 bond after forfeiting his passport.
Gandhi's attorney, Peter Coleridge, denied any suggestion that his client was trying to flee the country. Coleridge said Gandhi's trip to India was long planned and he had a round-trip ticket.
