Lewinsky Friend, White House Aide Testify
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 19) -- A high school classmate of Monica Lewinsky appeared Thursday morning before the grand jury investigating sex-and-perjury allegations surrounding President Bill Clinton.
Natalie Ungvari, who lives in Los Angeles and attended Beverly Hills High School with Lewinsky, arrived at the courthouse this morning with attorney Ralph Caccia. Caccia acknowledged his client was testifying before the grand jury but would not reveal the nature of the testimony.
Independent Counsel Ken Starr is interested in what, if anything, Lewinsky told Ungvari about her relationship with Clinton. Ungvari would not comment on her grand jury appearance, Caccia said.
Marsha Scott, White House deputy personnel director and longtime friend of the president, testified before the panel in the afternoon session. Scott has known Clinton for 30 years, and prosecutors were believed to be questioning her about what she knows about his relationship with Lewinsky.
On Tuesday, a former Lewis and Clark University classmate of Monica Lewinsky was called to testify. Ellen McCathren, a White House diarist, also testified Tuesday.
The grand jury is looking into reports Clinton had a sexual relationship with Lewinsky and encouraged her to lie about it under oath. Clinton has denied both accusations.
The Washington panel is off Friday.
Meanwhile, Linda Tripp, who tape-recorded conversations with one-time friend Lewinsky, during which the former White House intern alleged she had a sexual relationship with the president, wants a Justice Department probe of the release of her employment records and security documents.
Attorneys for Linda Tripp, Anthony Zaccagnini and Joseph Murtha, released the following statement Wednesday night:
"Linda Tripp has decided to formally request the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Defense - Inspector General's office to conduct formal investigations into the unauthorized release of information from her employment file and security clearance documentation. Formal letters of request have been sent by her attorney's to the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation and Department of Defense - Inspector General's Office."
