Clintons Raise Money For Their Party
LOS ANGELES (AllPolitics, May 4) -- President Bill Clinton and first lady Hillary Clinton spent Sunday night in Los Angeles raising money for the Democratic party.
In a speech at a party expected to raise between $120,000 and $150,000, attendees who had paid $1,000 to $3,000 per person heard the president say the economy is in good shape, but much work remains to be done.
Clinton said the budget surplus ought not be spent until the survival of Social Security is assured.
He added that important legislation remains to be passed, citing tobacco and health care as examples.
Among the partygoers were Shelly Hack, a former Charlie's Angel, Gloria Allred, the feminist attorney, and Mike Nichols, the director of "Primary Colors."
While the presidential motorcade was en route to a second fund-raiser, a small group of protesters could be seen holding up signs which read, "Please Teach Us English" in protest over California's Proposition 227.
After the first party, Clinton went to the home of Eli and Eddie Broad, the president of Sun America Insurance and a major Democratic contributor.
There, a record $1.1 million was raised for California's Democratic party at a $10,000-per-couple event attended by 175 people. Among those in attendance were celebrities Ted Danson and wife Mary Steenburgen, Oliver Stone, Michael Douglas and Rob Reiner.
