Jordan Completes Another Day Of Grand Jury Testimony
WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, May 5) -- Vernon Jordan testified again before the Lewinsky grand jury Tuesday, as Independent Counsel Ken Starr continued his investigation of the sex-and-perjury allegations against President Bill Clinton.
Jordan, a confidant and golfing partner of the president, arrived at the Washington courthouse shortly after 9 a.m. EDT and apparently was in the building all day. On his departure, Jordan said he expected to be called back and declined to answer reporters' questions.
"Today, as twice before, I answered all of the questions completely,
truthfully, honestly and to the best of my ability," Jordan said.
"It is my considered judgment that the Independent Counsel's office is not finished," he said. "I believe that I will be called again and if so, I shall return. In the meantime, I plan to return to my work, and will have no further comment."
Jurors may also hear this week from another key player in the controversy, presidential secretary Betty Currie.
Jordan testified for two days in March, presumably about why he sought to find ex-White House intern Monica Lewinsky a job in the private sector.
Prosecutors want to know whether Clinton had an affair with
Lewinsky and asked her to lie about it, and whether Jordan played any role in trying to keep her from telling the truth.
Clinton has denied that he had a sexual relationship with
the former White House intern or asked her to lie about it under oath.
After his March testimony, Jordan told reporters he helped Lewinsky search for private employment in New York and introduced
her to her first attorney. He also said he "kept the president of
the United States informed about my activities."
But Jordan insisted that he "did not in any way tell her,
encourage her, to lie, and secondly, that my efforts to find her a
job were not a quid pro quo for the affidavit that she signed" in
the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, denying an affair with the president.
