Committee Picks A New Face For The Dollar Coin

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 9) -- Native American guide Sacajewea, who led American explorers Lewis and Clark on their westward journey, has been chosen to replace Susan B. Anthony on the $1 coin, a committee appointed by Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin announced in Philadelphia Tuesday.

Following a day of presentations from citizens proposing images ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt to the Statue of Liberty, the committee made its final recommendation to Rubin, who must approve the decision.

Rubin had mandated the coin's image be that of one or more women who must be deceased. The new coin will be released in 2000.

More than 850 million Susan B. Anthony silver dollars went into circulation in 1979, but the coin was largely considered a failure because it was so similar to the quarter. The new coin will be the same size as the Susan B. Anthony coin, but will be gold-colored with an eagle depicted on the opposite side.
