Pardon, not censure, for turkey at the White House

Clinton and Thanksgiving Turkey

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, November 24) -- President Bill Clinton was presented with the 1998 National Thanksgiving Day Turkey for a presidential pardon Tuesday, upholding the tradition started by President Harry Truman 51 years ago.

The turkey, which didn't seem to understand it was being pardoned, made a run for it and had to be chased down in order to receive his stay of execution. "I must say of all the years I've been here, this is the most adventurous turkey we've had," Clinton said.

The National Turkey Federation presented this year's bird during the traditional Rose Garden ceremony. The turkey was raised in West Concord, Minnesota by Jerry Jerome, the National Turkey Federation Secretary Treasurer. The turkey is 23-weeks-old, and weighs approximately 45 pounds.

After granting the pardon, Clinton said the turkey will live out his days in Fairfax County, Virginia surrounded by "friends, not peas and potatoes."
