WASHINGTON (January 12) -- President Bill Clinton's personal attorney will send the $850,000 settlement to Paula Jones by close of business Tuesday, the deadline for the president to make the payment, sources told CNN.
The payment is in accordance with the settlement reached between Clinton and Jones in November of last year.
Sources familiar with the White House legal strategy say the settlement payment breaks down this way:
- $475,000 from the Chubb insurance company, from a policy Clinton carried when he was Arkansas governor.
- $375,000 from the first family's personal funds.
The settlement ends, once and for all, the civil rights sexual harassment lawsuit the former state employee filed against the president back in 1993. But the case is at the root of the Monica Lewinsky investigation that led to the impeachment of the president and the Senate impeachment trial.
