SALISBURY, North Carolina (AllPolitics, January 26) -- With equal parts patriotism, enthusiasm and optimism, the folks of Salisbury, North Carolina have kicked off the presidential draft campaign of favorite daughter, Elizabeth Dole.

About 1,500 Dole supporters, some of them bused in from neighboring states, showed up for a rally in Dole's hometown Saturday.

Dole resigned her post as president of the American Red Cross earlier this month, saying a 2000 White House bid was among the future options she was considering. The latest CNN/TIME poll has her running a strong second to Texas Gov. George W. Bush in a GOP primary race.
