Hillary Clinton meets with New York Democratic leader

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, March 12) -- First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton spent part of Friday speaking to New York State Democratic officials about a possible run for the U.S. Senate.

Sheldon Silver, speaker of the New York State Assembly, met with Mrs. Clinton privately for about two hours in the Map Room of the White House. He said he encouraged Mrs. Clinton to "seriously consider" being a candidate for the Senate seat being vacated next year by Democrat Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

He said he told her "we (New York Democrats) could be very supportive" and are "very much in favor" of her running.

Silver said Mrs. Clinton did not indicate when she might make a decision, but said she appeared "very interested" and both agreed there was no rush.

Mrs. Clinton had another meeting scheduled with New York state Democratic Chairwoman Judith Hope.

Silver said the only concern he raised was the first lady's public statements on the need for a Palestinian state and how that might anger Jewish voters.

Mrs. Clinton said she understands she would need to clarify that publicly, according to Silver, but that her position has never changed from the time she and the late Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin discussed it.

Silver said Mrs. Clinton believes it is difficult for the Israelis to negotiate peace with a non-official entity.
