Gore hails Kosovo victory; cautions tough times aheadBy Karla Crosswhite-Chigbue/CNN
June 11, 1999 WASHINGTON (June 11) -- Vice President Al Gore Friday is hailing what he calls a "victory" in the Balkans, but cautions that there are tough times ahead. Speaking to Emily's List, a political network for female Democratic party activists, Gore said the U.S. did the right thing in Kosovo despite the obstacles, but, "our celebration and sense of victory is tempered only by the sober awareness that there will also be difficult days ahead because this is an area that has a lot of conflict and fresh emotional as well as physical wounds." The vice president and Democratic presidential hopeful said: "It will be difficult but compare to the alternative there is just no question that this is a wonderful victory for morality." Gore, touching on issues from day care to domestic violence, told the group that he will "always, always defend a women's right to choose" referring to abortion. The vice president also called for tighter gun control measures. "We ought to reimpose the three-day waiting period under the Brady bill," he said. "We need to close the gun-show loophole, restrict the availability of guns to children and criminals and others who shouldn't have them." The House next week will consider several proposals for mandatory background checks at gun shows. The president of Emily's list, Ellen Malcom, said her organization is prepared to spend $5 million mobilizing women voters for the 2000 election. Malcom also praised Gore for all his work on women's issues but said there is one more thing he could do: choose a woman as his vice presidential nominee. "We have a whole list of candidates you can review for the job, and you can call it Al's list," she said. |
