Energy Department audit finds problems at Livermore lab

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 30) -- A recent Energy Department audit of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California found continuous flaws in security, according to a classified report scheduled for delivery to Congress.

Energy Dept.

Government sources tell CNN that the audit, conducted in April and May at the request of Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, found that overseas nationals could dial into a non-classified computer at Livermore and that the nuclear weapons lab was still susceptible to terrorist assault.

The audit also determined that plans to monitor e-mail had not been fully implemented as ordered.

An administration source tells CNN the computer problem has been largely corrected but the concerns about an assault are still being addressed. The report is to be provided to the House Commerce Committee in closed session Thursday.

The report may fuel Republican calls for an outside agency or semi-autonomous agency to oversee the nation's nuclear weapons labs. But Energy officials say the audit is part of Richardson's ongoing aggressive approach to root out security problems. Energy officials say the audit shows Richardson's reforms will get results.
