Bradley outraises Gore in third quarter; Bush marches on

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Democratic presidential contender Bill Bradley raised $6.7 million in the third quarter of 1999, surpassing Vice President Al Gore's take of about $6.5 million, sources in the Bradley campaign tell CNN.

Bradley's third quarter fund raising brings his 1999 total to about $18.4 million -- less than Gore's total of $24 million. But Gore has been spending money at a much faster clip.

The Gore campaign spent about $6 million in the third quarter -- virtually all the money raised during the same period. By contrast, Bradley spent just $4.2 million in the third quarter, leaving the two candidates with virtually the same cash on hand: $10 million.

Gore's campaign has been criticized throughout the year for spending too much money too quickly. Gore aides defend the pace of their spending, saying they had invested significantly in building a strong campaign organization across the country. They also said that since Gore is vice president, many of their travel and security costs are inherently higher.

But other Gore aides said that the rapid spending has been a major concern of campaign chairman Tony Coehlo, who has taken it upon himself to reign in some of the unnecessary expenditures.

On the Republican side, campaign officials tell CNN GOP presidential front-runner George W. Bush will announce his campaign has raised about $19 million this quarter, bringing his total fundraising to $56 million this year. The campaign will report $37 million cash on hand.

The Bush fund raising far exceeds the total raised by any presidential candidate, ever. Bob Dole shattered fund-raising records in the 1996 race with a total of $30 million gathered during the entire primary campaign. He also accepted federal matching money of $15 million, bringing his spending total that primary cycle to $45 million.

Bush, by contrast, has said he will decline federal matching funds for the primary season, allowing him to spend freely wherever he wants. Candidates who accept federal matching funds must abide by state by state spending limits.

Other GOP candidates are lagging far behind the top fund-raiser.

Sen. John McCain of Arizona came in a distant second in the Republican field, with receipts totaling $3 million this quarter for a year-to-date total of $9.3 million. Campaign officials say $1 million of this came in the last month, after McCain launched a high-profile book tour. The campaign reports cash on hand of $5 million.

Next in the GOP field was conservative activist Gary Bauer, who raised $2 million this quarter and reports $300,000 cash on hand.

Coming in behind Bauer was former American Red Cross president Elizabeth Dole, who raised $1.5 million for a total of $5 million this year. She has $1 million cash on hand.

Pat Buchanan, who is mulling a jump to the Reform Party, also reported receipts of $1.6 million this quarter, with $250,000 cash on hand. He's raised $4 million total this year.

Billionaire Steve Forbes came in close behind, with $1.4 million raised, but with his personal fortune Forbes can spend freely from his own pocket.

Bringing up the rear were Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, with $1.3 million raised and $220,000 on hand. Conservative activist Alan Keyes raised $520,000.
