Where to go for Stock Tips

The Asiaweek.com Stock Portfolio

HOT SITES

ASIAONE
www.asia1.com.sg/cgi-bin/bt/stocktalk/chat2.pl
Offers stock-tips galore (but only on Singapore shares) and the occasional homespun philosopher on the market's prospects. Hundreds of notes posted daily, but discussions can be difficult to follow because messages are sorted chronologically (latest first), not by topic. Still, regulars say they punt on information from the group.

BOOM.COM
baby.boom.com.hk/portfolio.forum_index2.html
The Hong Kong online brokerage now allows trading in U.S. stocks - and has started a bulletin board too.

FINET ONLINE
www.finet.com.hk
Lots of cool financial information like a price-earnings picker (you type in say, 5, and up comes a list of Hong Kong stocks trading at five times or less last year's earnings), business news and a technical analyst's column. You can get Hong Kong stock quotes, but they are delayed an hour. Look for scrip gossip in the "Teahouse" bulletin board, which has a moderator.

INTERACTIVE INVESTOR
www.iii-asia.com
Nice links to news and index information for key markets. Easy interface with a portfolio-monitoring function that allows you to track a selection of stocks on six exchanges (Hong Kong, London, Paris, Frankfurt, New York and NASDAQ). Exchange of opinions and tips happens via a mailing list outside the site.

M FINANCE
www.mfinance.com
Members receive e-mail bulletins on hot topics of the day and can call a special number for live Hong Kong stock quotes (but need to pay for the information). Onsite, there are interesting links to financial-news providers and day-trader sites.

MY STOCKS
snoopy.asia1.com.sg/realstk/mystocks/personal.html
You can put together an actual or imaginary portfolio of Singapore equities and track your paper profits and losses. Stock prices are updated every three minutes.

QUAM.NET
www.quam.net
To some investors, "Free Live Hong Kong Stock Quotes" is a sexier proposition than "Live Nude Girls." Quam.net has a good selection of English and Chinese commentary on the Hong Kong market too. The Quorum section has messages nicely arranged by thread (topics to you). There are company rumors, soapbox spiels and whiny agonizing by investors who think they paid too much for a stock. Much better if the site loads a bit faster.

QUICKEN
www.quicken.com.au
No bulletin boards, but loads of Australia-oriented financial information, portfolio analysis, tools like a mortgage estimator and an online brokerage that deals in stocks, unit trusts and warrants.

SCHRODERS
www.schroders.com
It's nice to know what the big boys (and girls) are thinking, given the institution-driven nature of Asian markets. Schroders, one of the world's largest unit trust firms, puts up some of its fund managers' opinions and portfolio profiles. Downside: the postings are updated about once a month, an eternity for investors.

STOCKHOUSE
www.stockhouse.com.au/bullboards
Learn all about Kerry Packer's business and other interests - the busiest thread this week is the Australian tycoon's alleged ties with Hollywood Madam Heidi Fleiss. Oh, yes, there are hot stock tips too.

THESTREET.COM
www.thestreet.com/int
This American online financial site now carries commentary on markets outside the U.S., including a column by ABN Amro strategist Christopher Wood. Access to the good stuff costs $9.95 per month but a 30-day free trial is available. The Asia material is skimpy but usually a good read and features stock picks - Wood is a respected Asia commentator.
