THE BOTTOM LINE
What makes the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, so successful? High standards and its independence, says Prof. M.S. Ananth, dean of academic courses. "Students are selected after rigo
rous testing, people don't work for awards, and most importantly, unlike other universities, there is no political interference here." IITM's institutional strength has helped it weather the tough economic times, adds Prof. R. Natarajan, the director. "Th
e Crisis has not affected us. We've remained insulated. Alumni support has been forthcoming, and we generate a third of our resources from a pool of donations, consultancy fees and grants, mostly from the corporate sector."
As with its sister IITs, the Madras campus's close cooperation with business is integral to maintaining the high quality of students and faculty. Ford Motor Co. recently gave a grant for a new chair in automotive technology. IITM also joined with
Analog Devices of the U.S. to develop a wireless communications system, while the university and multinational Siemens Solar Industries are training designers and technicians. IITM is also cooperating with domestic industry. The Indian Space Research Orga
nization has given IITM several aerospace-related research projects.
All these commercial links have boosted IITM's student-placement record. Of the 704 students completing programs last year, positions were found for 543. Those results give students a sense of security. IITM teaches "front-line stuff," says Anand
Ranganathan, a 20-year-old computer-sciences major. "We get to know what the cutting edge is. And after passing out, jobs are no problem." He marvels too at the facilities. "Almost every student gets a computer, which is unique in India. The laboratories
are well equipped and hostel life is fun." Classmate Anil Alexander, also 20, agrees. The pace at IITM is "hectic," he concedes. "The environment is studious. But if you're not riding high on illusions, this place is great." Rave reviews from people who s
hould know.
