Detour
The novice efforts at Shanghai's "throw it yourself" pottery studios may not be as steamy as Demi Moore's ways with clay in the movie Ghost, but locals and visitors don't seem to mind. The most popular such place is the Mingdu restaurant at 158 Maoming Road near Fuxing Road. It gets messy, so eat first and clay later by stopping for a bite at the ground floor eatery (house specialties include the Lake Yangchengdu crabs) before heading upstairs to the pottery studio and adjoining bar. A half-hour spin at the wheel costs $6 if you have dinner, $10 if you don't. It can take up to 10 days for your work to be glazed and fired, so plan a visit early in your trip (tel: 86-21-6433-7453).
