The borderlands of western China -- integrated into the mainland in 1914 -- are Tibetan in all but name. Ethnic Tibetans in Qinghai, Sichuan and Yunnan provinces continue to practice their traditional customs. James Whitlow Delano visited the region to photograph Monlam, the annual spring prayer festival that celebrates the Tibetan New Year. In this photograph, a nomad sports his finest robes, trimmed with snow leopard fur, and a fox-fur hat at the festival
