Come Back Alive By Robert Young Pelton (Doubleday; 288 pages)
Pelton would make a great traveling companion, but given his penchant for the bizarre and the dangerous, you probably shouldn't let him choose the destination. Come Back Alive is crammed with information about situations most people, we hope, will never encounter. Still, it's a fun read--and Pelton's advice would undoubtedly come in handy if you are ever kidnapped (befriend your captors), if your plane crashes (wear wool in case of fire) or if you're obliged to subsist on creepy-crawlies (earthworms are richest in protein).
