Jose Levy

Josi Levy is the chief correspondent for CNN en Español in the Middle East. The most veteran reporter of CNN's Spanish-language newscasts, he has covered the region's events from his headquarters in Jerusalem since 1998.

He has followed the day-to-day conflict in the Middle East, including the prolonged peace process and its agreements. Some of the top stories he has covered include the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon, the death of Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad and King Hussein of Jordan, and the assassination of Israeli Prime Minister Itzhak Rabmn. Other important events in recent history that Levy has reported on include the fall of the Berlin Wall, the break-up of the USSR and the Gulf War.

Levy has also reported on the Kursk submarine tragedy, the earthquakes in Turkey and Greece, the rise of power of the rightwing coalition in Austria, the Pinochet extradition process and the capture of Kurd leader Abdula Ocalan. In addition, Levy accompanied Pope John Paul II on his pilgrimage through the Holy Land, and on his previous visits to Egypt and Lebanon.

Levy obtained the only interview with Cuban President Fidel Castro on the day of his first meeting with Pope John Paul II in Rome. Levy also has interviewed Alberto Fujimori, Ernesto Zedillo, Carlos Salinas, Ernesto Samper, Eduardo Frei, Felipe Gonzalez, Javier Solana and Fernando de la Rza. From the Middle East, he has interviewed Yaser Arafat, Itzhak Rabmn, Shimsn Reres, Benjamin Netanyahu, Itzhak Shamir, and the founder of Hamas, Ahmed Yasmn. In the world of entertainment, he has interviewed Mercedes Sosa, Placido Domingo and Julio Iglesias.

Born in Melilla, Spain, Levy holds an undergraduate degree from the Universidad Central de Barcelona, and a Ph.D. from the University of Jerusalem.
