Tumi Makgabo
Tumi Makgabo is an anchor for CNN International, based in the network's Atlanta headquarters. She also hosts the program Inside Africa, which provides global viewers with a fresh look at economic, social and cultural affairs and trends in Africa.
Since joining CNN in July 2000, Tumi has covered numerous world events and issues including the fall of Liberia's former President, Charles Taylor; the change of leadership in the former Soviet republic of Georgia; the War in Iraq; the 2004 elections in South Africa; the U.S. Presidential elections in 2000; the World Conference against Racism in 2001; and the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Tumi has interviewed prominent world leaders such as South African President, Thabo Mbeki; Nelson Mandela; Nigeria President, Olusegun Obasanjo; U.S. President, George W. Bush; U.S. Secretary of State, Colin Powell; United Nations Secretary-General, Kofi Annan; Mozambican President, Joachim Chissano; Tibetan Spiritual Leader, the Dalai Lama; NATO Secretary-General, George Robertson; President of the World Bank, James Wolfensohn as well as world renowned stars such as Oprah Winfrey, Miriam Makeba, Pakistani former international cricketer, Imran Khan; and acclaimed violinist Maxim Vengerov.
Prior to joining CNN, Tumi co-anchored NewsHour, a news and current affairs program at SABC 3. She also anchored the channel's prime time evening news and hosted a current affairs program for SABC Radio.
Earlier in her career, Tumi presented a program featuring successful South African women and formerly hosted several radio programs in the region. She also anchored the coverage of the second democratic elections and later the inauguration of President Thabo Mbeki.
Alongside English, Tumi speaks several African languages.
