The Latest From Gaza
-- By CNN's Aneesh Raman
Let there be no doubt. Egypt is far from securing its border with gaza. As we rode to the border we saw egyptian troops throwing rocks on the road as makeshift barriers. But its doing little to stop the flow not just of Gazans but also, for the first time, Palestinian cars, taxis, flatbed trucks - a little of everything. And to see how difficult this situation is to bring under control you only have to go to where it began. Just moments ago, I stood on part of the main wall that came tumbling down Wednesday. There were less than a dozen Egyptian security forces, even fewer Hamas forces on the Gaza side and thousands of Gazans still walking into Egypt. Kids are even using the wall as a slide, so unthreatened are the Palestinians that the wall is going up anytime soon. It is a pandora's box of sorts that is now open and it's up to the Egyptian president to secure the border to appease his international allies; but to not do so with a heavy hand to keep Egyptians happy as well. We will see if he can pull that off.
Why not to tear the Gaza-Egypt border down completely? Gaza wa part of ancient Egypt for many centuries, people share
culture, language. No clash of religions should be expected. Make some type of union which with time might even evolve to one country.
It is the responsibility of the occupying forces to secure the borders and the Palestinians the Gaza border (as agreed between Israel and the Palestinians). The Palestinians out of pure desperation blew up the fence and entered Egypt and not the other way around. Israel has these people boxed in like mice. No electricity, no water no food and no medicine. The
Egyptians were wise to allow the starved Palestinians to cross over. The Egyptians could not and would not shoot women and children and sick people.
It is a very responsible decision from Egypt to allow Palestinians to cross the border.I salute President Mubarak who alowed this to happen. What does the world expect Egypt to do? Turn away Hungry Men-Women and children who are in urgent need of Food,Shelter and Medical attention? The situation in Gaza is desperate. The international community is always happy to stand silently and watch one humanitarian crisis happen one after another without any real political action apart from useless meetings and endless promises to reslove the middle east situation. When will the world leaders start to act to save the lives of innocent people whose lives are manipulated by a minority who seek political gains at the expense of innocent people's lives.Did President Bush not have any intelligence about this situation whilst his visit to the middle East? He promised to support the peace process in the last year of his term.Too Little Too Late Mr Bush!I am sure you have enough influence to resolve this crisis if you really wanted to!I suggest you need to work harder in spreading peace in the region if this is what you really stand for, because for many people across the world your visit to the region only looks like a desperate attempt to secure financial deals with the Arabs and restore a long lost frienship with the Arabic community.I am sure you have enough power and influence to resolve this issue in a peaceful political way without having to watch a whole palistinian community starve to death?!
The Jews are upset because the Palastinians are doing something about their conditions. Now that they can buy from other places Isreal will lose money from the captives they have been holding for decades. The Egyptian economy will prosper and the Palastinians will be free from the new Nazis of the world, the Jews. Well done Hammas someone is finally not afraid to do the right thing for the Palastinians.
When people start to starve they turn desperate I don’t blame the people of Gaza. No parent is going to sit down and wait patiently for help while their children starve. Israel picked the war with the Palestinians but they can’t handle the consequences, you don’t expect to come in and invade a country, knock down their houses, kill innocent people and expect that these people are going to sit down and have a cup of coffee and watch you do it! Sorry I forgot these people are being stripped of their basic human rights of food shelter water how we can expect them to have coffee. Of course they are going to break the wall down wouldn’t you?

The Palestinians have no need to suffer. The truth is Hamas doesn't care about their suffering. If they did they would not bombard Israel with rockets knowing what Israel would have do to protect itself. They could have their own State and lots of money which has been promised to the Palestinians would be brought in. They prefer to bombard Israel. They really want to get rid of Israel more than they care about their people. I feel sorry for the Palestinians not because they are starving but because they have a government that couldn't care less about them.
The Palestinians aren't starving. The lack of tobacco products and cookies does not constitute international outcry for the "starving" Palestinian people. Caged like mice? Hardly. The residents of Gaza enjoy more freedoms and liberties than any other Muslim population in all its oppressive glory. The Hamas have staged a great deal of these "blackouts" to garner international sympathy for an ideologically ancient and historically hateful people.
I'm sorry but you all seem to have forgotten that the Palestinians were launching rockets in to Israel. After promising multiple times to stop. The Israelis are defending themselves and retaliating. I do not think that they are to blame here. It is not a humanitarian crisis there, as it is being portrayed. the Palestinians have everything that they need. Their electricity plant was being used to launch rockets in to Israel from. KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE!!! That is why there is no power it was shut down as a safety measure. I think you have no room to talk and judge till you have been there (Israel) and seen the damage the Palestinians have caused. Just this weekend there were two terrorist attacks on Israel by the Palestinians. ! - 2 Palestinians went into an AMERICAN institution with knives and stabbed 2 students, before they were wrestled to the ground. both are hurt but ok. one of the two assailants was one of the men recently released from Israeli prison as a peace gesture. the other attack was in Jerusalem at a check point. A man drove up and started shooting at the solders. He killed one and severely injured another. Now before you go and start feeling bad for the Palestinians, please note that these were two unpremeditated attacks. Both happened four hours north of Gaza. The Israelis should not be put to blame for the Palestinian stupidity. The Israelis are the true victims here.
Let's live in peace and coexist . . .nope not the Hamas way. Let's blame everything on Israel. Stop attacking Israel and give peace a chance. Nope, can't do that either. If they have peace then children can go to school and become educated, but if they stay out of school then they can learn hatred and become suicide bombers. You would think some generation would get tired of dying for nothing. Egypt is trying to do the right thing, but give Hamas some time and lose their welcome. They are experts at pissing others off. Only ones who suffer are the young children who want to make a difference.
It's a sad situation. Just another sad consequence of voting in terrorist leadership like Hamas. Rather than doing what it can to get more goodwill and aid for their people, the Hamas leadership is trying to fight with any and everyone, no longer just Israel, but even Egypt too. Will there ever be another democratic election in Gaza as long as Hamas is running things?
I agree with the other comments that the border should be torn down completely.
It is preposterous that America and Israel are allowed to cage the Palestinians and force them to starve to death.
The international community is doing nothing to help the people in GAZA, israel boxed them in, what do you really expect them to do. Bye bye diplomacy...when people starve. I am an american and wonder how my president wuld react if jewish people where the ones in this situation...well we all know it will be on CNN 24/7 and the it will end the same day...but we are nottalking about jewish people...we are talking about helpless arabs...and helpless arabs do not translate into vote.Seems human rights only apply to selected humans...arabs not included.
The real culprit here is Hamas. Thousands of rockets have landed in Israeli towns. Hamas has attacked israel in this way to provoke a response from Israel that the international community would condemn. What is Israel supposed to do? Allow its civilians to be attacked? Would any nation in the world sit silent as its cities become targets of missiles? Israel has every right to respond to Hamas' aggression, and the sad state of the Palestinian people is the fault of Hamas, not Israel.
I applaud President Mubarak for his humanitarian considerations in allowing the Gazans to enter Egypt for the sake of their survival. These people were merely trying to get some means of heat and food to feed their children, elders, and critically ill family members. President Mubarak was conscientiously aware of this when the wall broke down. It is obvious he understood their plight. Besides him, King Abdullah and Queen Rania of Jordan possessing humanitarian attributes; I wonder why the rest of the world leaders do not follow their examples? Again, I applaud these three humanitarian leaders who are (in essence) genuine leaders!
Until Israel faces the reality of allowing the Palistinians to have a "viable" State, nothing will happen in a positive way. Zionism has become a negative force for peace.
I read the comments and so much disinformation is accepted as fact.
Please allow me: 1) Gaza isn't occupied and hasn't been occupied since 2005. Israel controls Gaza's borders just like America controls it's borders with Canada and Mexico. 2) Gaza's men, women and children are in need of food, medical supplies and fuel BECAUSE Hamas staged a coup and took over Gaza. Since Hamas is an internationally recognized terrorist organization no one can be forced to supply Hamas. 3) Israel didn't "pick the war with the Palestinians" the Palestinians were blowing up airliners - see: Black September - and killing American politicians - see: Senator Robert F. Kennedy - decades before 2008. So please, SPARE US THE POOR OLD PALESTINIANS B.S. 4) Firing unguided rockets at civilians in Israel is collective punishment. You don't know when or where the rockets will hit... and they come day after day, month after month, year after year. Did Britain send supplies to Germany during the blitz? Because that is exactly what people are asking, for Israel to send supplies to the people firing rockets at their towns.
Please don't misread my previous comments. I suggested dismantling Gaza/Egypt border only, not
Gaza/Israel border. While doing the former may be a wise step, the latter is an invitation to disaster.
Crossing the Mexican or Canadian border only takes a second, depending on traffic and if there is even a border stop at the crossing point. Not do we control our neighbors airspace or territorial waters.
Let's not forget the assassin of RFK was Christian and had lived in this country since he was very young. And I don't think Britian was voted over to Germany like Truman, Britian and the UN gave Palestine to create Israel. Israel doesn't have to send supplies, but needs to stop preventing others from doing so.
since 2005 Israel as killed over 650 Palestinians ! while rockets from Gaza have killed 8 Israelis ! The same reasoning that the pro-Israeli genocide supporting comments on this blog claime that Israel must protect itself may be applied far more appropriately to Hamas : Hamas lands rockets in Israeli in order to protect their own people - if Israeli government cared about the folks in the few Israeli towns being hit with rockets they would actually enter into a cease fire with Hamas , as Hamas has perpetually avowed it is willing to do , but Israel refuses to speak with Hamas : Israel sent millions of cluster bombs all over civilian areas of Lebanon that killed and are killing civilians to this day - Israel has no interest or care for thousands of civilians she kills or maims in other countries , and as a result its own citizens are put at risk from these other nations attempting to defend their own populations from Israel's bloody aggression
So as Americans we will sit and complain from thousands of miles away about how horrible it is for the Palestinians, but we have a lot of people that just like so-called "Peace". Wake up people!
Lets ask ourselves what we would do if Mexico started firing rockets over the border into the US? Would we be sure to just sit by and take it as americans died and still provide Mexico with "Goods"? NO, we would launch a full force military strike and secure our border until the situation was considered under control and secure. Now lets imagine it has happened over and over again after many peace talks and compromises, yea I think we would respond with a much heavier fist then Israel is now. We would be pissed as Americans, I would offer my help and weapons to secure our border, wouldn't you? So why do we try to bash Israel when they are being completely reasonable with exremists who hate them. Wake up people, im sure it feels good to sit in your nice suburban neighborhood with your hot cup of coffee and read CNN and bitch about a situation you know nothing about. I have been to Israel and am of Jewish blood, and have seen the useless violence from Hamas and it will make you sick!
To: endclusterbombus!
Failure or success does not show of intentions! Israel Being succesful in defending it's civilian lives targeted by Arabs and Arabs failing in its goal of having more unarmed killed or its failure in losing more terror masters everyday targeted by cool Israeli police has nothing to do with "Palestinian" humanity, the opposite is true, they are bend on annihilation of Israel, they say so and they try that 24/7 since 1929, long before that 'occupation" excuses was even born.
in answer to10.12.Arabs attacking Israel since 1929? what a Joke I did not know that there was an Israel in 1929.to 7.02 why would Mexico attack the US Mexico is not occupied by the US .as for Palestinian so called rockets which are toys by the way compared to the Israeli apache and F16 that is attacking Gaza every day over 700 Palestinians were killed by these Israeli weapon in the last two years. no Israeli was Killed by these so called Rocket so stop blaming an occupied people and start looking at the real problem which is occupation .
For those of you who think there's a 'humanitarian crisis' in Gaza, get a clue. Hamas has not only caused chaos with the rockets they send over into israel (causing harsh Israeli reprisals) but I wouldn't exactly call the need for cigarettes, candy, TVs, and motorcycles (which some people bought) a 'crisis'. As usual, Hamas has manufactured this situation of their own volition. As is the Muslim way, they use the media to garner sympathy from clueless pinheads like most of you posters. Study the conflict and understand the history and the players before you demonize Israel. They are the only friends the Palestinians have.
The hypocrisy displayed on this blog is sickening.
Until 1967 Gaza was under brutal Egyptian occupation. Nothing went in, they did not have Egyptian citizenship, thus could not get out. Where were all of you bleeding heart liberals then? When Jordan, during Black September used tanks and canons point blank on Palestinians, where were you? But when the Israelis can be bashed, you creep out of your holes. Go creep back, that's where you belong, you double-standard fake liberals. And in case you did not know, in 1929 the Arabs of Hebron carried out a progrom among their Jewish neighbors, exactly waht Isarel can expect from Hamas, Jihad and Co even today.
Everyone is forgetting one very important thing. According to the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel, Egypt is allowed to guard the borders with only 750 soldiers (seven hundred and fifty)with light weapons. The seven hundred and fifty work three shifts that is less than 300 soldiers to protect borders 14 (fourteen) kilometers wide.
Now in gods name how are the Egyptians supposed to protect their borders against 750,000 (and it is growing) people who crossed. Mind you the 750 were 400 in the beginning and after many negotiations (both parties have to agree) was raised to 750. I just wish people to be informed first before shooting their mouths off.
in answer to2.56.why should Egypt give citizenship to Palestinians? these are Palestinians not Egyptians they have their country and Land which Israel stole from the .as for 1929 there was no Israel then jews were about 10% of the population then even after few thousand Jews immigrated to Palestine.
to 8:04
you did not even bother to relate to anything I said about Egyptian and Jordanian occupation of your friends, the Pals. Because you have no answer. Where were you then? Why did you not complain? Could it be you only care when Jews defend themselves? Hypocrite!!
to 3.20 pm.the reason I did not answer your Question about Egypt and Jordan is simple.your question was childish, but because you insist on me replying I will. there was no occupation by Jordan and Egypt, this land was what remains of Historical Palestine at the time and it stayed free from Jewish terror until 1967.Egypt and Jordan did not Annex Palestinian lands like Israel did after 1967 war.so stop repeating Israeli lies and propaganda no one believe these lies any more.
"this land was what remains of Historical Palestine at the time"
Your insistence on propaganda lies is sickening. There never was a "historic Palestine" and you know it. Furthermore, Jordan included the annexed West Bank in all maps and granted citizenship to its inhabitants. As a matter of fact, Jordanian civil law is applied there to this day. So please, stop spreading propaganda and try to stick to facts (which obviously you are incapable of doing)
When the romans came and took the land from the israelites/jewish people again, they renamed the land from "the land of judea" to the "Syriapalistina". Later on they devided the land into two parts, with the town governors. Guess what the land of judea turned into? Palistine! So, historical palistine? Ummm land of the jewish people. look into history everyone.
in answer to 9.38.you need to have a history lesson.(1)Moses married a Palestinian woman so there was a Palestine.(2)Sampson was fighting the Palestines,so there was a Palestine.
(3)Lord Balfour the Lord of todays Israel promised the Jews a Homeland in Palestine,so there was a Palestine.Ishmael the son of Abraham the Father of the Arabs is older than Issac the Father of the Jews so the Palestinian Arabs are there before there was a Jew. now the natives of the land of Palestine accepted 22% of Palestine to 78% to the jews.the question now is will the Jews stop stealing land from that 22% that suppose to be Palestine?I know that you will answer that Ishmael is not the son of Abraham, then you have to convince me where in the Bible it says Ishmael is not the son of Abraham.
To 3:02
and when will you reply to 2:56? or to 6:37? or to 8:04? Or does your Hamas booklet not relate to these matters? |
