Nicolas Cage beat two previous Oscar winners taking the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of a dying drunk in "Leaving Las Vegas."

Richard Dreyfuss

Dreyfuss, who won a best actor Oscar in 1977 for "The Goodbye Girl" plays Glenn Holland, a band leader who sidelines his dream of becoming a great composer in "Mr. Holland's Opus."



Hopkins

Anthony Hopkins

Hopkins, who won a best actor Oscar for his performance in "Silence of the Lambs," plays the fallen president in Oliver Stone's "Nixon."




Penn

Sean Penn

Penn plays a murderer on death row in "Dead Man Walking."




Troisi

Massimo Troisi

Troisi plays Mario, a timid postman who learns the language of love from poet Pablo Neruda. Troisi, a comedian and actor, died of heart trouble a day after he completed filming "Il Postino."
