Mira Sorvino won the Oscar for best actress in a supporting role Monday for her performance in Woody Allen's "Mighty Aphrodite."
Sorvino played prostitute Linda Ash in Allen's comedy about a sportswriter who tries to reform the mother of his adopted child. All of the nominees in the category for best actress in a supporting role were first-time Oscar nominees.
The other nominees were:
Joan Allen
Allen plays Pat Nixon, the long-suffering wife of Richard Nixon in Oliver Stone's docu-drama on the life of the fallen president.
Kathleen Quinlan
Quinlan plays Marilyn Lovell, the wife of astronaut Jim Lovell who flew the harrowing five-day mission in "Apollo 13."
Mare Winningham
Winningham plays a folk rock singer pushed to her limits by her n'er-do-well sister in "Georgia."
Kate Winslet
Winslet plays passion-driven Marianne Dashwood in "Sense and Sensibility," Jane Austen's story of sisters in search of love and security adapted for the screen by best actress nominee Emma Thompson.
