The Friar Flip

(CNN) -- Nutmeg is not just for eggnog anymore! "Cocktail" bars have been concocting mixtures to quench consumers' thirst for something new.

With eccentricity and originality a must, the typical garnishes are not enough. Nutmeg has changed from the hands of the chef to the bartender. Ground nutmeg graces the palate with that something extra you've been searching for in a cocktail.

Many drinks require nutmeg for just the right balance of sweetness and spice. Drinks such as the Ballylickey Dickey, Acapulco Joy and Princess Alexandria are finished with a sprinkle of nutmeg.

Spice up your snifter by adding nutmeg to your liqueurs and cordials. Frangelico, Bailey's Irish Cream, and Grand Marnier are excellent with a touch of nutmeg. If you are a port lover, cocktails such as the Broken Spur, Port Sangare, and Classic Coffee Cocktail merge port wine with nutmeg for an unforgettable effect. Martini drinkers should try chilled Stolichnaya Vanilla with a touch of nutmeg. Cream-based drinks such as the White Russian and Kahlua and Cream are even better with a dash of nutmeg.

Nutmeg is not just a holiday spice, although many seasonal brews add it for a warmer, winter version. Spiced cranberry cider and spiced hot cocoa can be enjoyed anytime the weather cools down. Even coffee bars have a nutmeg shaker on the counter. Put a little in your morning coffee -- be daring and spice it up a little bit.
