Move over Ken: Barbie swoons over Elvis
(CNN) -- Barbie loves Ken, but she longs for Elvis.
The Barbie Loves Elvis Gift Set, a set of two collectible
dolls, debuted Friday at Graceland, the estate where the
"King of Rock 'n' Roll" died 20 years ago. The dolls were to
go on sale Saturday at a Graceland Plaza gift shop, across
the street from the mansion, for $79.95. Toy stores will
begin selling them in late August.
In the set, Elvis dons one of his patented jumpsuits,
microphone in hand. Barbie is his No. 1 fan, a
swooning-poodle skirted fan who carries a picture of the
beloved music icon.
"We decided not to use Ken because we thought there was more
appeal in Elvis as a collectible," Lisa McKendall, director
of marketing communications for Mattel, told The Commercial
Appeal in Memphis.
"The whole cult following of Elvis is amazing."
Mattel has not released any numbers on how many of the dolls
have been produced. McKendall said the Elvis set is the
latest in a series of collectible Barbies tied to pop
culture. The most recent were Star Trek Barbies, released
last
year, she said.
