Review: Watch out Jason, that new killer is 'Still' in town

From CNN Interactive Sr. Producer Dave Rickett

(CNN) -- It's fitting that this movie opened on Friday the 13th. It works as a better installment to that series than to its parent film. Lacking the whodunit mystery component of the first, "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" is simply one gruesome ice hook murder after another. Instead of stalking only the kids who committed the crime against him, this second edition of the slicker-wearing killer goes after anyone and everyone.

All that said, it's not a bad film for what it is. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, almost from the beginning. Much like Jason, this fisherman with a mission is never too much in a hurry to get to his victims. Teens wielding knives, peeking behind closed doors and bravely wandering through the dark recall all the elements of the slasher flicks that started it all.

If you're looking for a movie that keeps you guessing (like the first "I Know..."), you won't find it here. But, If "Halloween H20" wasn't a big enough dose of nostalgia, you can get your fill with this one.

    THE FINAL WORD:
It's like "Scream" set in a fishing village, but without the clever self-awareness of being part of the horror genre. Pretty scary and unpredictable.
    THE FINAL WORD:
It's like "Friday the 13th" set on a Caribbean island. The same slow-moving killer stalks his victims and massacres them with no regard to plot.

The end of this one is another perfect set up for a third installment of the series. What should they call it?

Kind of a buggy combination of javascript and frames makes this site difficult to navigate at times. "The making of" is the deepest section, with behind-the-scenes casting and filming info. "The vacationers" and "The islanders" breaks down the characters and their roles. You can also play a couple of shockwave games, look up show times, win a Bahamas trip and buy/download souvenirs. Not a whole lot of original content here.

    CRITICAL ROUNDUP:
Here's a look at what other critics have to say:

E! Online -- "Despite working within the confines of the hot-teens-in-distress genre, director Cannon proves he's no hack by doing something truly shocking: He's made a sequel that's a cut or two above the original." Grade: B+
Entertainment Weekly -- "'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer' lacks even the good, guilty setup of 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' -- the sense that the heroes are fleeing the consequences of their own crime." Grade: C Film.com -- "It's hard to feel scared or sympathize with the menace felt by these teens, because they're just such dopes, and because we're never given a reason to care whether they live or die."
Mr. Showbiz -- "There's nothing at stake here. It's just a lot of frantic running around to see who will be back for future sequels." 44 out of 100 The New York Times -- "The follow-up to the phenomenally successful 'I Know What You Did Last Summer' is an empty, farcical blood bath that's virtually shock-free except for one preposterous plot twist."
USA Today -- "The hook is what Danny Cannon ought to get for directing 'Judge Dredd' and this movie in the same lifetime, but there's plenty of blame to go around, starting with Trey Callaway's script." 1 star out of 4
