Oleta Adams explores gospel roots in latest CD

LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Two-time Grammy nominee Oleta Adams says she returned to her religious roots to compile her latest CD, "Come Walk With Me."

Adams, a minister's daughter, said in an interview on CNN Tuesday that she hesitated writing religious music for a long time.

"I think it was expected of me, being a minister's daughter, and I sort of fought that," she told CNN's Showbiz Today. "And also, I think that you need to really have spiritual growth in order to be able to talk to other people about your faith. And it was very important for me to kind of mature in this whole spiritual walk and have something to say from experience, and that's why it took quite a while."

Once she set her mind to it, Adams says, the rest was easy.

"It was the simplest thing in the world, because it's already written, you know," she says. "You open up the good book, and you just find another way to interpret what the message is."

Adams says despite the CD's gospel theme, the music has something for everyone.

Check out the selection she performed on CNN's Showbiz Today.
