Mary J. Blige going 'Live' for her fansWeb posted on: Friday, August 14, 1998 2:22:48 PM From Correspondent Mark Scheerer NEW YORK (CNN) -- Mary J. Blige has a lot going on right now. For starters, one of her songs is on the soundtrack for the just-released movie "How Stella Got Her Groove Back." And she also has a new live album out that strengthens her hold on the title "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul." The album "Live, The Tour" captures Blige's performances during her late 1997-to-early 1998 tour, complete with mistakes. "I just, you know, decided to give the fans the warning of what a concert is about instead of going back and tricking them like I'm that dope, I'm that perfect 'cause I'm not," Blige says. Mistakes in a live album? Really? "There's a lot of them," she says, even if you have a hard time finding them.
Blige certainly hasn't made too many mistakes on her journey from the Bronx to the big time. Initially a protege of Sean "Puffy" Combs, Blige broke free in a manner that -- contrary to rumors -- was amicable. "You go, you part," she explains. "But we didn't part like, 'I hate you. I hate you.' We parted like, you know, 'You go ahead, and good luck to you...'" Her new CD documents an artist as impressed with her audience as it is with her. "The artists sitting right in the front row, New Addition, Bel Biv Devoe, Rickie Bell and them, sitting right in front, Mike Tyson. You know, it was huge. I was like, 'Whoa!'" she says. Despite such evident success, she says success hasn't gone to her head. Instead, "it's just taught me to stay a human being, stay humble, because you know, going through all the stuff that I went through, it could be gone like that. You know what I'm saying?" she asks, only somewhat rhetorically. "There's a lot of talent out there in those ghettos and everywhere else... So you got to realize that what you have is a gift and a blessing and just move forward like that, and don't think that you're better because your job is better."
