No 'Stunt,' just Barenaked Ladies having funWeb posted on: Tuesday, August 18, 1998 10:17:46 AM NEW YORK (CNN) -- Barenaked Ladies are not bare and they're certainly not ladies. They are a five-member Canadian rock band known for their humorous, high-energy concerts who also happen to have a top 10 album ("Stunt") to add to their repertoire. Mainstream success has been "strange for us," says singer-guitarist Steven Page. "We've kind of been perpetual underdogs for the last five or six years, been sort of clawing our way up here," he told CNN's Laurin Sydney on Showbiz Today. "Now we're here, we're like -- our claws are nice and sharp. We're still going, though." "We're still going for blood, then?" jokes group member and fellow songwriter Ed Robertson. "Yes," answers Page. "Watch out, 'Armageddon' soundtrack." The jokes and fun aren't just during interviews. On stage, Barenaked Ladies put on a wild concert, "but we're musicians foremost," says Page. "I don't think anyone who's seen a show or listened to one of our records will doubt the musicality of the band. We just have a lot of fun while we do it." A lot of the group's past success has come from fans who see the group in person, then bring their friends next time. Actor Jason Priestly is one of the more prominent fans to pass on good word-of-mouth for the band, helping to spread the news about the Barenaked fun. "He's got a really big mouth," clowns Robertson. But, Page hastens to add, that's a good thing in this case. "(Priestly) came to a show in, I think, about '94, and became a huge fan," he says. "We'd see him at a bunch of shows and eventually we just kind of got to be friends with him, and he directed our video for a song called 'The Old Apartment' and then had us on 'Beverly Hills 90210,' which was a big boost for us."
