(CNN) -- Some musicians slow down considerably when they start their families, but not Shawn Colvin. When she was 8 1/2 months pregnant with her first child this summer, she sat down and recorded an album of Christmas songs.

Colvin says the resulting product, "Holiday Songs and Lullabies," was inspired by the Maurice Sendak book "Lullabies and Night Songs."

She'd received the book from her parents as a child. When she found out that her keyboardist, Doug Petty, had gotten the same book when he was young, "Things just kind of worked out," she told CNN's Showbiz Today. In fact, Sendak even agreed to illustrate the album cover.

Among the 14 songs on the album are "In the Bleak Midwinter," "Love Came Down at Christmas," "Silent Night" -- and "Rocking," which Colvin performed for Showbiz Today.
