NEW YORK (CNN) -- Carlos Santana inspired not only a generation of rock 'n' rollers, but a generation of Latin musicians now coming into full bloom. While he has already had an influential career, he's not done yet -- he performed live this week, along with some surprise guests, at a taping of "Hard Rock Live."

He also has a new album on a new label, "Supernatural." He invited several other musicians -- Dave Matthews, drummer Cotter Brufort, Everlast, and his brother among them -- to help put together the album, which he calls "a masterpiece of joy."

"It's really music that it's like sound, resonance and vibration creates acupuncture for the listener, so people won't feel so desolate so much, because this is kind of like a desolate planet," he told correspondent Mark Scheerer during an appearance on CNN's Showbiz Today. "As you know, most people are not happy unless they're miserable, so we want to rescue and present them a new menu -- or a new alternative with this music, that truly rearranges the molecular structure."

And once he got to work, Santana says even more musicians came, as if out of the woodwork, and asked to work with him -- among them, Eric Clapton, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20.

"I really believe that not one of them is into entertainment or show business," Santana says. "We're real musicians, and we feel that music can truly transform the consciousness of this planet."
