Today's buzz stories:

Music came first for McEntire, not juicy film role

Reba McEntire dropped plum 'Titanic' part

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (CNN) -- Reba McEntire tells the Tennessean that she was picked to play the part of Molly Brown in James Cameron's blockbuster "Titanic," but had to back out because of scheduling conflicts. The country star said she rearranged her schedule to do the role, but the shooting of "Titanic" was moved, interfering with McEntire's concert dates. "We'd have lost no telling how much money to move those dates again or cancel them," McEntire said. The part was ultimately played by Kathy Bates.

Brazilians mourn death of Leandro

RIO DE JANEIRO (CNN) -- Brazilians are mourning the loss of wildly popular singer Jose Luiz Costa, known by his millions of fans as Leandro. The country singer died early Tuesday of cancer at the age of 36, a spokewoman for the family said. Leandro had been fighting thorax cancer at a hospital in Sao Paulo for days. Hundreds of fans and journalists had camped out at the hospital for a vigil that included hour-by-hour media updates on his condition. Globo Network television Tuesday showed scenes of thousands of distraught mourners lining up to pay their respects at his coffin, which was draped with a Brazilian flag and topped by a trademark cowboy hat.

"Riverdance"

All-star dance to honor Diana cause

LONDON (CNN) -- An all-star September dance performance that will include stars from the Royal Ballet, the hit Irish step-dancing show Riverdance, and the recent West End revival of "Sweet Charity" will honor Princess Diana. Organizers announced Tuesday that proceeds from the event will go to various organizations dedicated to a cause that was close to Diana's heart -- the campaign against land mines. The artists' services and Royal Albert Hall, where the event will take place, are being provided at no charge. The princess died in a Paris car crash on August 31 of last year.

Bergen

Bergen-Quayle debate on single motherhood still going strong

NEW YORK (CNN) -- In a letter in Tuesday's New York Times, actress Candice Bergen accused a former Dan Quayle speechwriter of misquoting her in a Times Op-Ed article to make it appear that Bergen now agrees with the former vice president's charge that the TV show "Murphy Brown" wrongly glamorized out-of-wedlock motherhood. Bergen, who starred as Murphy Brown for 10 seasons, referred to a June 12 piece by Lisa Schiffren in which Schiffren quoted Bergen from a Los Angeles Times article. Bergen said her comments were taken out of context and shortened to better serve "the crux" of Schiffren's article. "This latest broadside from the Quayle camp is too much to let pass," the actress wrote.

William B. Davis, non-smoker, plays "The X-Files"' Cigarette-Smoking Man

'X-Files' conspiracy revealed! Well ...

BLAINE, Washington (CNN) -- Perhaps it's not the mother of all conspiracies, but the truth is out on the ominous Cigarette-Smoking Man of "The X-Files." It's this: He hates tobacco. William B. Davis, 60, who plays the chain-smoker on the Fox TV show and in the recently released film version, says he hasn't smoked in 20 years, and he uses herbal cigarettes while lighting up on the show. Davis is also an active runner, snow skier and Canadian water skiing champion in the 55-and-older age group.
