Tyson faces assault charge

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Mike Tyson faces charges of assault stemming from a traffic incident on Monday. Richard Hardick, 50, of Frederick, Maryland, filed a criminal complaint against the 32-year-old Tyson, claiming the former heavyweight champ kicked him in the groin following a three-car accident during rush hour Monday. Hardick said in his complaint that his car was rear-ended, forcing it into Tyson's Mercedes convertible.

During the ensuing ruckus, Hardick says Tyson kicked him and punched the other driver in the face, despite being restrained by his wife and his bodyguards. "I did not kick anyone. I did not punch anyone," Tyson said in a statement released by his lawyer. Tyson is awaiting a hearing in Nevada on his application to regain his license to box, which was revoked just over a year ago after he bit the ears of champion Evander Holyfield.

Gibson

Deborah Gibson stripping inhibitions

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Former pop teen queen Deborah Gibson is stepping out. Gibson has agreed to play the part of stripper Gypsy Rose Lee in a revival of "Gypsy" at the Paper Mill Playhouse in New Jersey. "You definitely will see more than you've ever seen of me before," Gibson told the New York Daily News, although she added, "I'll actually be wearing a skimpy little bodysuit with strategically placed jewels." Gibson first rose to fame as the innocent teen-age teenybopper who brought "Only In My Dreams" to pop charts in the late 1980s.

"Simon Birch"

Irving likes 'Owen Meany' treatment

HOLLYWOOD (CNN) -- Author John Irving says he's happy with the way his novel, "A Prayer for Owen Meany," was treated in movie form. The film version, retitled "Simon Birch," is being released September 11. "It's not 'A Prayer for Owen Meany' but I liked it," Irving says, "and I'm happy with the way I was treated."

He told The New York Times he agreed to sell the rights to "Owen Meany" as long as the title was changed for the movie. "The story was significantly different from the story of the novel and it would be unfair to my readers to mislead them to think they'll see 'A Prayer for Owen Meany,'" he said.

Schwarzenegger

Schwarzenegger sues Globe over story about his health

SANTA MONICA, California (CNN) -- Arnold Schwarzenegger did not take kindly to an article by The Globe that claimed he was in ill health and fears having a heart attack. The muscle-bound actor, who starred in the "Terminator" series and numerous other action films, filed a $50 million libel lawsuit against the tabloid.

Schwarzenegger underwent surgery in April 1997 to replace a faulty aortic valve. The Globe's August 4 cover story "maliciously implied that specific doctors had warned Schwarzenegger that he was a 'ticking time bomb,'" said the actor's public relations agency, PMK, which added that Schwarzenegger does not have coronary heart disease. The Globe has not commented on the case.
