David and Seinfeld
|
NEW YORK (CNN) -- The sitcom that allegedly was about nothing is worth much more in cash. According to Forbes magazine, the creators of "Seinfeld" -- Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David -- raked in the rewards of selling the show into syndication, topping the annual Forbes list of highest-paid entertainers. Seinfeld made $225 million last year; David took in $200 million. Movie mogul Steven Spielberg made $175 million to place third on Forbes' list, and Oprah Winfrey and James Cameron rounded out the top five.
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Tracee Ellis Ross, the daughter of singer Diana Ross, says she isn't using her name to win jobs as an actress. "Any child who uses their name in a way to get them places, it will get back to them," Ross, 25, told the Daily News. "It doesn't really mean anything if you can't get the work done." Ross has landed several jobs in television and film, most recently playing a track star in the NBC movie "Race Against Fear," but says her "ideal" role would be on a sitcom. "I'm in this for the long haul," she said.
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Mrs. Travolta owes Jimmy Cagney a "thanks." John Travolta says in his new biography, "Travolta: The Life," that Cagney was his "main source of inspiration" outside his family. Travolta told biographer Nigel Andrews that he would sit in front of the television set whenever an old Cagney musical came on and step along when Cagney did his tap dance routine, "I'm a Yankee Doodle Dandy." Travolta's mother seized on the fascination. According to Andrews' book, she would pretend to be talking to Cagney on the telephone, and tell her son that "Mr. Cagney is calling. He wants you to brush your teeth and tidy your room." Travolta would immediately oblige, and ask "Does he ... does he like me?"

U2
|
LONDON (CNN) -- Rock group U2 apparently doesn't need to make new records to earn big bucks. The band just signed a $50 million deal with Polygram for three "best of" albums, starting first with an album featuring material from 1980-1990 that's due out November 2. The deal is unique in that while other veteran acts such as R.E.M., Madonna and Janet Jackson have made hefty deals in the recent past, their contracts were for new material. U2 has sold more than 87 million records worldwide, but the group's most recent effort, "Pop," was a disappointment compared to the sales of past records.
