PALM SPRINGS, California (CNN) -- On both sides of the United States on Wednesday, friends and family of Sonny Bono gathered on both coasts to remember the congressman and entertainer who died one year ago in a skiing accident. Rep. Mary Bono, his widow and political successor, was among those who attended a private graveside memorial service in Palm Springs on Tuesday, her staff said. Cher, Bono's former wife and singing partner, and their daughter, Chastity Bono, did not attend.
In Washington, people left flowers and candles at a park created in Bono's honor. "People have been leaving things for two days," said Geary Simon, a friend of Bono's who created the park near Dupont Circle. Bono was 62 when, while skiing in South Lake Tahoe on January 5, 1998, he hit a tree and was killed.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Harrison Ford is America's favorite actor, according to the annual Harris poll. Based on interviews with 1,010 adults, Ford, the star of blockbusters such as the "Star Wars" trilogy, "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "Witness," and "The Fugitive," was the number one choice among people aged 18 to 24 as well as for American adults overall.
Western movie superstar John Wayne, who died in 1979, was the second most popular star, ahead of Mel Gibson, who came third, and Clint Eastwood and Tom Cruise, who shared fourth place.
Eastwood had topped the list last year.
The highest ranking female movie star was Julia Roberts of "Pretty Woman" and "My Best Friend's Wedding" fame, who came in 15th position.

ATLANTA (CNN) -- Elton John has announced a new tour beginning next month in which he will perform concerts without a band, for the first time in his enduring career. John will kick off his piano-only tour in Roanoke, Virginia, and will also play in Tennessee, Florida, Mississippi, Michigan, Louisiana, Iowa, Alabama and Illinois.
"It's a way to keep myself fresh and on my toes," John, 51, said in Tuesday's editions of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Playing alone is rewarding because "you get to do numbers you don't normally perform with a band, and it gives you a chance to talk to the audience," he said. John, known for hits such as "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road," "I'm Still Standing" and "Candle In the Wind," was the top concert draw for 1998, bringing in an estimated $46.2 million, according to the concert business trade publication Pollstar.

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Craig Marks, the executive editor for Spin magazine, has filed a $24 million lawsuit charging that two bodyguards for shock rocker Marilyn Manson beat him after the cross-dressing star threatened him. Marks suggested the beating stemmed from his magazine's decision to drop its tentative plan to feature Manson on Spin's January 1999 cover.
He says shortly after Manson warned that "he could kill Marks, his whole family, and everyone he knew" after a November 23 heavy metal rock performance, the bodyguards slammed him against a wall and choked him in a backstage dressing room at Manhattan's Hammerstein Ballroom.
Manson's lawyer, Paul Cambria, denied the attack happened. "Our investigations show all of these accusations to be totally
groundless," he said. "The witnesses sharply dispute Mr. Marks' account of what happened." Marks' lawsuit names Manson, his record labels -- Interscope Records Inc. and Nothing Records Ltd. -- and an unidentified agency that hired the two bodyguards.
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Alex Kingston, who plays Dr. Elizabeth Corday on NBC's medical drama "ER," married writer Florian Haertel December 29 in Santa Fe, New Mexico, her publicist, Nancy Seltzer, said Tuesday. Kingston, 35, and Haertel, 34, first met on a blind date. This is the second marriage for Kingston, who was divorced from actor Ralph Fiennes ("The English Patient") in 1997. It is the first for Haertel, a native of Munich, Germany. He is a freelance writer for German media, Seltzer said. Kingston began as a theater actress before adding film and TV roles.
