Kapur
|
NEW YORK (CNN) -- "Elizabeth" might have garnered seven Oscar nominations, but the film's director, Shekhar Kapur, got the cold shoulder from the Academy in the category of best director. Still, Kapur, who is described by Reuters as "Hindu to the core," took the slight in stride. He says he was happy that "Elizabeth" was nominated for best picture, along with six other categories, including best actress in Cate Blanchett.
"A director is the sum of all these parts, so ... that's me," he said. "Take away everything and give me best picture." Kapur says before the nominations were announced, he was not considering whether "Elizabeth" might or might not be chosen. The night before, he turned off the television set in his hotel room, hung a "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door and went to bed. His wife telephoned him from India with the news the next day.

Kidman (left) and Cruise
|
LOS ANGELES (CNN) -- Judita Gomez, a former assistant to Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, is suing the couple. Gomez claims the movie-star couple fired her without cause, after she received "good or excellent" work evaluations during the five years that she worked for them, helping them select clothes and with household chores.
Gomez says she was fired last summer and "is now unable to obtain employment-related benefits at the same salary she was earning." Gomez is seeking unspecified damages from the couple and two of their other employees, her lawyer said. A spokesman for Cruise and Kidman did not return a phone call seeking comment after business hours Tuesday.

Madonna
|
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Madonna's making movies again. The entertainer, whose "Ray of Light" album garnered six Grammy nominations, is set to play a cynical tabloid TV reporter in a new romantic comedy tentatively titled "Ton 80," according to Variety. Madonna will produce.
In the film, her character is assigned to find and expose a reclusive female self-help author. It turns out the author is a gruff, handsome, dysfunctional man who hardly takes his life lessons to heart. Trouble is, the reporter falls in love with him and must decide whether to jeopardize their relationship by selling him out.
Madonna last appeared on the big screen in 1996's "Evita," playing the title character. She enjoyed acclaim with her breakthrough role in 1985's "Desperately Seeking Susan," but was pilloried for such efforts as "Shanghai Surprise," "Who's That Girl?" and "Body of Evidence."

Actor Jason Priestly on the set of "Beverly Hills 90210"
|
HOLLYWOOD (CNN) -- Fox announced on Tuesday that its long-running soap "Beverly Hills 90210" will be back for a 10th season. Veterans Luke Perry, Jennie Garth, Tori Spelling, Brian Austin Green and Ian Ziering are sticking with the show, which initially featured them playing high school kids. With the return of Perry offsetting the departure of Jason Priestley, "Beverly Hills, 90210" has held up fairly well in ratings this season, despite new competition from the WB's "Dawson's Creek." The announcement follows Fox's decision last week to cancel "Melrose Place," a show that was spawned from "90210."
