Andrews

Julie Andrews unable to sing since surgery

NEW YORK (CNN) -- Actress and singer Julie Andrews now admits she has been unable to sing since she had throat surgery nearly two years ago. Andrews had dismissed reports in December that her singing career is over, but now says she is considering filing a lawsuit over the operation, which removed non-cancerous throat nodules. She says doctors had told her the operation was "a routine procedure that I was told would not be threatening to my vocal chords."

The 63-year-old star, a Broadway and screen favorite whose voice swept across the hills in the film "The Sound of Music," said she will keep trying to sing, though doctors don't give her much hope it will happen. She said she tries to be optimistic, but it's difficult.

"To not sing with an orchestra, to not be able to communicate through my voice, which I've done all my life, and not to be able to phrase lyrics and give people that kind of joy, I think I would be totally devastated," she said in an interview with Barbara Walters, to air on ABC Friday evening.

The disc will solely feature the score by John Williams, who has won an Oscar and two Grammys for his "Star Wars"-related scores. The London Symphony Orchestra, with Williams conducting, began recording the music last week, and sessions will continue over the next two weeks. While no release date has been set, the soundtrack is expected to reach retailers before the film opens May 21. Sony Classical will release to radio a single derived from the score, most likely in April.
