GBU-24 (Smart Penetrating Bomb)

DESCRIPTION: This is a 2,000-pound smart-bomb, which is guided by laser and carried by the F-18 and F-14. Other "basic" smart bombs include the GBU-12 (500 pounds), GBU-16 (1,000 pounds) and the GBU-10 (2,000 pounds).

ANYTHING NEW? The United States has far more of these "basic" smart bombs in the region. During the Gulf War, smart bombs made up only about 10 percent to 15 percent of ammunition stocks. Now roughly 50 percent of the inventory available in the Gulf is precision-guided.
