After years of violence and widespread human rights abuses,
President Megawati Sukarnoputri promised last year to
restore law and order in the restive Aceh province through
economic incentives, greater political freedom and military
crackdowns.
However, a long-lasting solution and
real peace remains elusive in this resource-rich, northern-most
province. In the year 2001 alone, more than 1,500 have
been killed in the violence.
