Thirty-nine members of the Heaven's Gate cult, including their leader, are found dead on March 26 in a San Diego suburb. Apparently they believed they would leave their bodies and join alien travelers in a space ship behind the Hale-Bopp comet.

Peruvian troops on April 22 storm the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima where Tupac Amaru rebels had been holding 72 Japanese businessmen and Peruvian officials since December 1996. One hostage dies; the rest are freed. Two soldiers and 14 rebels are also killed.

North Korea acknowledges for the first time that children in the country are dying from malnutrition due to the widespread famine there.

Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled Zaire for more
than three decades, is ousted by rebel forces led
by Laurent Kabila, who renames Zaire the Democratic
Republic of Congo. Mobutu dies of an undisclosed
illness in Morocco four months later.

McVeigh guilty for his part in the 1995 bomb
attack on Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
Later in the month McVeigh is sentenced to death.
