Allegations surface that the Democratic National Committee accepted campaign contributions from the Chinese government.

Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr considers leaving for a teaching post, then changes his mind.

May 2
Republican congressional leaders and White House negotiators announce they have reached an agreement to balance the federal budget by 2002.

May 27
The U.S. Supreme Court unanimously rejects Clinton's request that the Paula Jones lawsuit against him be delayed until he leaves office.

August 5
Clinton signs balanced budget plan.

September 22

A federal grand jury indicts Henry Cisneros, former secretary of housing and urban development, on charges he lied during 1993 confirmation hearings about payments he had made to a former mistress.

Clinton visits war-torn Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

February
Deng Xiaoping, China's paramount leader and author of its free-market economy, dies on February 19 at age 92.

March
Thirty-nine members of the Heaven's Gate cult, including their leader, are found dead on March 26 in a San Diego suburb. Apparently they believed they would leave their bodies and join alien travelers in a space ship behind the Hale-Bopp comet.

April
Peruvian troops on April 22 storm the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima where Tupac Amaru rebels had been holding 72 Japanese businessmen and Peruvian officials since December 1996. One hostage dies; the rest are freed. Two soldiers and 14 rebels are also killed.

April
North Korea acknowledges for the first time that children in the country are dying from malnutrition due to the widespread famine there.

May
The British Labour Party wins a sweeping majority in parliamentary elections on May 1, giving its leader Tony Blair the prime ministry.

May
Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled Zaire for more than three decades, is ousted by rebel forces led by Laurent Kabila, who renames Zaire the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mobutu dies of an undisclosed illness in Morocco four months later.

June
A federal jury in Denver on June 7 finds Timothy McVeigh guilty for his part in the 1995 bomb attack on Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. Later in the month McVeigh is sentenced to death.

July
The territory of Hong Kong, ruled for 156 years as a British Crown Colony, is returned to the Chinese government on July 1.

July
NASA's unmanned Mars Pathfinder lands and begins transmitting the most detailed information and images of the red planet yet seen.

August
Britain's Princess Diana is killed in a Paris car accident on August 31.
