President Mohammad Khatami gained nearly 77 percent of the vote
Khatami wins second term

Iranian voters have handed reform-minded President Mohammad Khatami a resounding victory in his bid for a second term, dealing a rebuke to conservative hardliners who have dominated the country since the 1979 Islamic revolution. Results from the June 8 election showed Khatami with nearly 77 percent of the vote, well ahead of his nine conservative and independent challengers and more than the 70 percent he received four years ago.
