Eccentric reformer and former Health
Minister Junichiro Koizumi has won a stunning victory
in the race to replace Japan's Prime Minister Yoshiro
Mori as leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
The election to party president virtually
guarantees the job of prime minister and with it the
brief to regain public support for the ruling coalition
government and rescue the nation's feeble economy.
CNN profiles Koizumi
along with his race mates - former prime minister Ryutaro
Hashimoto, Economics Minister Taro
Aso and the conservative LDP policy chief, Shizuka
Kamei -- and their race to become Japan's 11th leader
in 12 years.
