Ayman al-Zawahiri An Egyptian surgeon, Ayman al-Zawahiri heads Egypt's al Jihad, a militant Islamic group that is blamed for the 1981 assassination of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and a failed 1995 assassination attempt on President Hosni Mubarak. He met Osama bin Laden while treating injured Afghan resistance fighters in Afghanistan during the Soviet occupation.
