H. Carl McCall is a Democratic candidate for New York governor. He is the New York state comptroller, a position he has held since May 1993, when the New York State Legislature elected him to fill an unexpired term. In 1994, voters elected him to the position, making him the first African-American elected to a statewide office in New York. He easily won re-election in November 1998 by a margin of 1.4 million votes. As comptroller, McCall is the chief fiscal officer of New York state, responsible for governmental and financial oversight and the manager of the state's multibillion-dollar pension fund.

EDUCATION
McCall received a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College in 1958. He also studied at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and received a master's of divinity from Andover-Newton Theological School in Andover, Massachusetts. McCall is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ.

CAREER
McCall has a long history of public service. Before becoming comptroller, he was president of the New York City Board of Education from 1991 to 1993. From 1983-1985, McCall was the New York State commissioner of human rights, a New York state senator from 1975 to 1979 and deputy administrator of New York City Human Resources Administration from 1966-1969.

McCall was a vice president at Citibank from 1984 to 1993 and a deputy ambassador to the United Nations from 1979 to 1981. McCall has been a commissioner of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and was executive vice president of WNET, a public television station in New York. In 1982, McCall unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and was elected to the board of the New York Stock Exchange in 1999.

McCall has received a number of awards, including the 1997 Nelson A. Rockefeller Award for Distinguished Public Service.

PERSONAL
He is married to Joyce Brown, president of the Fashion Institute of Technology at the State University of New York. They live in New York City. McCall has a daughter, Marci, from a previous marriage.
