The western Indian state of Gujarat has been racked by religious violence since earlier this year, with authorities counting around 900 deaths -- unofficial figures double this -- and thousands having had to flee their homes.

The ruling Hindu nationalist party has recently won emotionally charged elections marked by Hindu-Muslim tensions.

The poll result could further strain relations between Muslims and Hindus and spark fresh unrest in a state where one of the world's best-known apostles for peace, Mahatma Gandhi, was born, lived and developed his philosophy of non-violence.
