More women attend college than men, a gap that is expected to widen
EDUCATION
More than three-quarters of graduates majoring in education were female, while only 24 percent of the 108,168 graduates were male. The male-female breakdown was similar for psychology majors.
COMPUTER SCIENCE
Following a 10 percent drop between 1990 and 1995, the number of computer science-related degrees skyrocketed 48 percent between 1995 and 2000. Males made up 72 percent of computer science majors in 1999-2000.
MATHEMATICS
The number of 2000 college graduates majoring in mathematics fell 12 percent from 1995, accelerating a 10 percent decline between 1990 and 1995.
CAREER-ORIENTED STUDIES
Two-thirds of secondary schools offered one or more job-training programs, including 88 percent of two-year schools.
