Davis recalled, Schwarzenegger wins
After weeks of a sometimes surreal campaign, voters ousted incumbent California Gov. Gray Davis from office in the October 7, 2003, recall election. Californians turned to action movie hero and political novice Arnold Schwarzenegger to come to the rescue as the state's next governor, selecting the movie star over 134 other candidates on the ballot. It is only the second time in U.S. history that a sitting governor has been recalled, the first being North Dakota Gov. Lynn Frazier in 1921.
