Ahmed al Jaber Air Base
Location: About 35 miles southwest of Kuwait City; 75 miles south of Iraq.
Personnel: About 1,400 U.S. military.
Units: 332nd Air Expeditionary Group, 3rd Combat Communications Group, 9th Intelligence Squadron and a Patriot missile battery, according to the military research group Globalsecurity.org.
Aircraft: Force includes F-15E Eagle and F-16 Falcon fighters, and A-10 Thunderbolt close-support aircraft.
Role: The Air Force and U.S. allies use part of this Kuwaiti air force installation to monitor the southern Iraq "no-fly" zone. The Pentagon says F-15E Strike Eagles based here have taken part in strikes in Afghanistan.
