Deployments in the Persian Gulf

Two F-15E Strike Eagle's from the 391th Fighter Squadron, 366th Wing, Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, fly over the Persian Gulf in this Air Force file photo. The squadron along with other aircraft from the wing are deployed to Shaikh Isa Air Base, Bahrain, as part of the Air Expeditionary Force VII in 1998.
Shaikh Isa Air Base

Location: Sitrah, Bahrain.

Personnel: About 1,900 U.S. military, mostly Air Force.

Units: No U.S. aircraft are permanently based here, though allied aircraft have used the facility regularly since the end of the Gulf War. The base was built to house F-16 Falcon fighter jets.

Role: Shaikh Isa was a key allied base during the Gulf War. A three-year expansion that began in March 2000 will allow the base to hold larger aircraft.
