Shaikh Isa Air Base
Location: Sitrah, Bahrain.
Personnel: About 1,900 U.S. military, mostly Air Force.
Units: No U.S. aircraft are permanently based here, though allied aircraft have used the facility regularly since the end of the Gulf War. The base was built to house F-16 Falcon fighter jets.
Role: Shaikh Isa was a key allied base during the Gulf War. A three-year expansion that began in March 2000 will allow the base to hold larger aircraft.
